“my paintings are as much about how I feel about the landcape as what I see”
For the past thirteen years I have lived and worked on Dartmoor where the constantly changing moods and light of the moor are my main inspiration.
Heather clad moorland, wide open landscapes, rushing rivers and stone tors shape the landscape of Dartmoor. Despite being a place of human settlement since ancient times the land remains untamed, it has this in common with the coastal areas of the South West Peninsular to which I am also drawn.
Whenever possible I prefer to work on site, using not only brushes and palette knives but bits of dried gorse, rags and mainly my fingers as this gives me a feel for the painting and the way the paint is applied.
The scene never stands still, always changing – sometimes extreme, ominous and challenging, often heart warming but – always breathtaking.
